The MeriƧ river forms part of the border between Turkey and Greece and is
notorious for the number of deaths associated with it. The vast majority of
those who drown in the river are not found and those who are often cannot
be identified. Since 2012 the Greek authorities have increased security at this
border pushing people to take the more dangerous sea route across the
Aegean Sea.
