The Meriç river forms part of the border between Turkey and Greece and is notorious for the number of deaths associated with it. The vast majority of
those who drown in the river are not found and those who are often cannot be identified. Since 2012 the Greek authorities have increased security at this border pushing people to take the more dangerous sea route across the Aegean Sea.
